Supporting someone get their first taste of the workplace is a rewarding experience. Mentoring a young person provides the opportunity to experience first-hand their transformation as confidence levels grow.
As an employer you need to be supportive and understanding – I’m sure you can remember how scary your first day at work was!? It will be necessary for you to help your trainee in learning basic employment skills and knowledge in your industry. Each day your trainee will complete a diary about their day and you will be required to make a brief comment about their progress.
Upon completion of their work placement with you it will be necessary for you to provide the individual with constructive feedback on their time with you. Alternatively you may choose to offer an opportunity for them to progress to a full apprenticeship. What’s next?
