We currently have an exciting opportunity available with Cambridge City Council for people who are passionate about this career route and who would be keen to undertake a two year Surveying apprenticeship starting employment in Summer 2016, with formal training and college starting in September 2016.
To assist with the delivery of efficient building surveying and contract management services to Council property and facilities. As an Apprentice you will be undertaking a Level 3 Trailblazer apprenticeship with the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust.
Main Roles & Responsibilities:
Assist with monitoring the quality and progress of works carried out on site. Ensure that all works are carried out within the parameters of the Health & Safety Regulations. Keep accurate records and produce comprehensive reports.
Develop skills to carry out accurate stock condition, Housing Health & Safety Rating System, energy, repair, void property and other surveys, to the Council’s properties.
Assist with day to day contract management of the Council’s maintenance contracts.
Develop skills to diagnose building defects and investigate complaints by tenants and from other sources in order to ensure effective solutions are identified and delivered
Develop skills to prepare estimates and specifications for works to Council property including the financial control, contract management and supervision of works carried out by contractors.
Assist in identification of new projects and the preparation of Scheme Appraisals that describe the work, prepare budget costs and prioritise when the work is needed.
Promote Cambridge City Council customer care values particularly in resolving customer complaints
Carry out any other duties as required by your line manager from time to time in accordance with the grading of the post.
Experience of meeting and talking to members of the public (essential)
Experience of working in a Local Authority / Housing Association / public sector environment
Relevant experience of working in building maintenance property related environment
Ability to learn how to diagnose and remedy building defects. (Essential)
H&S Legislation, Knowledge of construction techniques and problems, Housing / Contact Law and Legislation
Knowledge and understanding of effective customer care (essential)
Interest in the built environment with a view to developing a career in Building Control (desirable)
Verbal, written and numeracy skills
Good organisational skills
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Supervisory skills of staff and works contractors, Familiar with all standard Microsoft Office software packages;
Able to work with minimum supervision
Ability to learn to carry out property surveys, travelling between sites, using hand-held technology software and including working at height
Essential: Minimum of 6 GCSEs grade C or above (including Maths, English and a Science) or appropriate NVQ level 2 (essential)
