We currently have an exciting opportunity available with Cambridge City Council for people who are passionate about this career route and who would be keen to undertake a two year Surveying apprenticeship starting employment in Summer 2016, with formal training and college starting in September 2016.

Job Purpose

To learn the Building Regulations and assist in the day to day function of the building control section via practical experience and day release at College.

To obtain appropriate qualifications which are applicable to the post.

To deal with a range of building control applications and associated building control activities under appropriate supervision.

Main Roles & Responsibilities:

Undertake straightforward agreed checks of plans initially under the supervision of a Senior or Principal Building Control Surveyor.

Assist with routine examinations of building work to ensure conformity with all appropriate regulatory requirements, initially under supervision of a Senior Building Control Surveyor. Site inspections are undertaken at height, in confined spaces and in all weathers.

Inform applicants, agents, builders and the general public of the basic requirements of the building regulations.

To carry out research and background reading needed to gain knowledge of the building regulations, British Standards, and other technical guidance documents used in the design and construction of buildings.

Keep up to date with new legislation, best practice, and other related publications.

Actively participate within the building control team and identify and achieve personal development opportunities.

Provide administrative assistance in supporting compliance with ISO 9001 Quality Assurance Management System.

Carry out any other duties as required by your line manager from time to time in accordance with the grading of the post.

Some basic knowledge of the construction industry

Competent and confident approach to communication, both verbal and written

Able to meet the challenges legislation and understanding building products

Ability to prioritise workloads and meet strict deadlines

Basic IT skills including Microsoft Office

Practical and creative approach to problem solving and the resolution of issues

Self-motivated, positive attitude and good team player

Interest in the built environment with a view to developing a career in Building Control

Knowledge and understanding of effective customer care

Personal qualities

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Qualifications required

Essential: Minimum of 6 GCSEs grade C or above (including Maths, English and a Science) or appropriate NVQ level 2 (essential)

•You must be eligible to live, work and remain in England

•You must have a strong interest in Building Surveying

•You must be able to demonstrate how you would benefit from the support of the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust
